Samwise Gamgee
Sam, the gardener for Frodo's home of Bag End, is a constant
factor throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He is solidly rooted, never having
any doubts, and always a source of strength to his master. Sam never seems to complain,
except about Gollum, to whom he takes an instant and strong dislike, and never quits
even when there is no hope to be seen. It is difficult to see changes in Sam, although
he does seem, as with every other Hobbit in the Fellowship, more mature at the end of the story it is hard to tell
exactly why he does.
Sam is unusual for a Hobbit in that he has blonde hair; as does Rosie Cotton, the Hobbit
lass he marries after his return to the Shire.
Sam's character strongly represents the values of loyalty and perseverence, as it is these
qualities in Sam that make it possible for Frodo to finish his errand, and arrive at Mount
Doom, almost more that anything that Frodo does. Below is a picture of Sam that shows
his role very well, that of supporting his master.
